György Sándor (September 21, 1912, Budapest – December 9, 2005, New York) – Hungarian and American pianist, teacher, student and friend of Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodály.
Graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. He began his concert career in 1930. In 1939 he made his debut at Carnegie Hall. Received American citizenship (1943), fought in the US Army (1942-1944).
In 1946 he performed Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. He performed and recorded a complete collection of piano works by Bartók, Kodály, Prokofiev. He also performed works by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninov.
He owns piano transcriptions of works by Bach, Duke, Bartok. He taught at Southern Methodist University (1956-1961), the University of Michigan (1961-1982) and the Juilliard School (since 1982). Conducted master classes in Paris, Jerusalem, Assisi, Salzburg. Among his students are Helene Grimaud, György Shebök, Malcolm Bilson, Marton Illes and others.
