A fantastic 1967 documentary by Albert Gendelshtein entitled, ‘Dmitri Shostakovich – Sketches for a portrait of the composer’. There’s a lot of rare footage in this, and although the film is without subtitles, most of the footage doesn’t need a translation. In addition to Dmitri, there’s footage of and with his son Maxim Shostakovich, Leonid Kogan, Sviatoslav Richter, Galina Vishnevskaya, Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, Evgeny Mravinsky, a re-creation of the legendary concert in which Karl Eliasberg conducted the seventh symphony…..and much more.
